Physics Homework Questions ( From the Internet ) : Tarzan is often portrayed as swinging through the jungle from vine to vine. Each of Tarzan's vines are 30 meters long and Tarzan catches each vine when it is at rest 15 degrees to the left of the (downwards) vertical, swings on it until it stops at an angle of 15 degrees to the right of vertical, and then grabs the next vine at rest and repeats the process. What is Tarzan's average horizontal speed in m/s?

Since he is always swinging from 15 degrees left to 15 degrees right on a constant length of vine (30 m), it can be approximated to simple pendulum oscillations.
Time taken in half oscillations = pi * sqrt(l/g) = 5.5 seconds (pi = 3.14, l = 30 and g = 9.8 m/s^2)
Horizontal distance covered = BC = 2*CD = 2*30*sine(15 degrees) = 15.5 meters
So, average horizontal speed = 15.5 / 5.5 = 2.83 m/s

Tarzan weighs ๐๐ and swings from a cliff using a vine that is ๐ long. The cliff is โ above his swing's lowest point. What tension is in the vine? For a weight of ๐๐=688๐ , a vine of length ๐=18๐ , and a fall of โ=3.2๐ , conservation of energy at the bottom of the swing (where Tarzan swings with speed ๐ฃ) gives,
Then, using a centripetal-acceleration pseudoforce ๐น๐=๐ฃ2/๐ , the vineโs tension ๐ follows:
